BIMAL ROY

The film director/producer Bimal Roy was a trend setter who gave much contributions to Indian cinema and will be ever remembered.
His films like 'Parineeta,Do Bigha Zameen,Madhumati,Bandini'Sujata' etc influenced  so much for the progress of better cinema in  Indian feature films.
He was well noted for his manifestation of social and romantic films in a realistic manner.He paved way for the artistic films and parallel films with the success of his classic film 'Do Bigha Zameen'.His films could be enjoyed by all sectors of the society and while he portrayed them in a realistic manner those films kept and contained  the entertainment values also so that  many of them were commercial successes.
Bimal Roy was born in Bengal province in the year 1909 and his entry to film field was as a camera assistant at 'New Theatres Pvt.Ltd' at Calcutta.
He worked as assistant to film maker P.C.Barua and worked with him in the famous film like 'Devdas' in which K.L.Saighal was the hero.
After working there till 1950 he shifted to Mumbai with  his team members that  included 'Hrishikesh Mukherjee,Asit Sen,Salil Choudhary,Kamal Bose' etc  who all became very popular soon.
His film 'Parineeta'(54) based on a Bengali novel by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay in which Askok Kumar and Meena Kumari acted as the main pair was well received by the audience.His portrayal of social and romantic themes in a realistic manner  earned critical acclaim. 'Do Bigha Zameen' was a film which he directed in 1953 in a classical and artistic manner.
Do Bigha Zameen won International prize at Cannes Film Festival.It won All India certificate of Merit for Best feature film.
His film 'Biraj Bahu' won All India certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film next year.
His film 'Devdas' received certificate of merit for Best feature film in Hindi on the year 1955.
In 1958 President's silver medal was received for his film 'Madhumati'.
In 1959 All India Certificate of Merit for 3rd Best feature film was given for his film 'Sujata'.
In 1963 Best feature film in Hindi was given for his film 'Bandini'.
















In 1953 Filmfare Award for Best feature film and Best Director was given to him for the film 'Do Bigha Zameen'.
Filmfare Best Director Award was given to him in 1954 for 'Parineeta' and in 1955 for 'Biraj Bahu'.
In 1958  Filmfare gave Best Film Award for 'Madhumati' and Best Director Award for 'Madhumati'.
Filmfare gave Best Film Award and Best Director Award to Bimal Roy for his film 'Sujata' in 1959.
Filmfare gave Best Director Award in 1960 to Bimal Roy for his film 'Parakh'.
In 1963 Filmfare gave Best Film Award and Best Director Award to Bimal Roy for his film 'Bandini'.
His film 'Do Bigha Zameen' was rated as one among '25 Must see Bollywood Films' by  'India Times Movies'.
Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy were the main actors of this film.
'Abhi Bhattacharya and Kamini Kaushal were the main actors of 'Biraj Bahu' which he directed in 54.
Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala were the pair of 'Devdas'(1955).
Madhumati which was produced and directed by Bimal Roy in 1958 won award as Best feature film in Hindi, and 9 Filmfare Awards including 'Best Film,Best Director,Best Music Director,Best Female playback singer,Best Dialogues,Best Art Direction and Best Cinematographer'.Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala were the main pair of this film and it was a big commercial success.
Sunil Dutt and Nutan were the main pair of 'Sujata' and the movie entered into the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
Ashok Kumar,Nutan and Dharmendra were the main actors of 'Bandini' which was produced and directed by Bimal Roy in 1963.The film was based on a Bengali Novel by Charu Chandra Chakraborty.Bandini was the 10th highest grosser of that year.
A postage stamp was issued by India post in his honour in 2007.
Bimal Roy passed away on 8th January 1965.
